A mix between gelato and a truffle, this classic Italian dessert originates from Pizzo, Calabria. According to records, it was created in 1952, by a gelataio named Giuseppe De Maria, known then as Don Pippo. Out of a need to create something new, he moulded a mixture of chocolate and hazelnut gelato, to surround a melted dark chocolate filling, finally he covered that in some bitter cocoa powder.
Traditionally, the Tartufo, was made with two flavours of gelato, with a fruit center (usually cherry)
Brioche Con Gelato
Brioche con gelato is a traditional Italian dessert originally from Sicily. It’s relatively simple and easy to make at home too. This dessert sandwich consists of a soft, buttery brioche bun that’s stuffed with a generous amount of gelato. It’s especially popular during the hot summer months, and it’s sometimes even eaten for breakfast.
If desired, you can top it with a sprinkle of chopped nuts and a pinch of powdered sugar for extra flavour.
Spumone (from spuma or “foam”), is a moulded gelato (a lower-fat Italian form of ice cream) made with layers of different colours and flavours, usually containing candied fruits and nuts.
Spumoni is popular in places with large Italian populations such as the United States, Argentina and Brazil. August 21 is National Spumoni Day in the United States. The most popular flavours used in spumoni are cherry, pistachio, and vanilla (or chocolate), with red, green, and white colours representing the Italian flag.
